Who we are...
The idea to begin Flight of Dreams (now Feathers and Fuzz) began about 12 years ago when we were blessed with a homeless, hopeless and featherless cockatiel who was abandoned on the side of the road and picked up by one of our customers. Although his avian beauty had been compromised we brought him home. He quickly stole our hearts. Tuco was sweet and playful and unconditionally loving. He ate with us, talked to us and was happy to ride around endlessly on our shoulders. When we lost him in 2003 the void left was impossible to fill and the bird journey began. We adopted a Senegal first, and then a WILD Patagonian and then a baby ringneck, then the boys wanted some cockatiels and then..........The Flight of Dreams.
We have taken in abused and abandoned parrots of all sorts, purchased breeding pairs of small birds to support the cost of maintaining the others, handraised babies purchased from other breeders and then began color breeding our own pairs. Our birds are kept and raised in our home; socialized with my friends, my husband (who put up with me bringing home everything with feathers or fur for over 10 years & still lets me live here), our 2 teenage sons, Justin & Kyle ,who spend their weekends helping keep babies sweet & cages clean, our precious pooches, my kitties & ocassionally even the guinea pig! Our birds are fed a variety of fresh foods , seed, egg food, millet & pellets. They are exposed to different colors sound and textures from the time they are 14 days old so they are well adjusted before being abundance weaned and sent to bring endless joy, hours of entertainment and occasional surprises to their new family. We hope you enjoy our site and if you choose to add a feathered friend to your family we hope you will consider our aviary....the Flight of Dreams.
The puppies...well....I always had big dogs....fixed big dogs. Then my friends Pekingese had puppies- mom threw one out & somehow my son convinced me to bring it home, since it was the poor helpless one I had no choice right? Less than half the size of my cat she showed me real quick that big things come in small packages. Reese scaled fences, slipped through holes and could leap to the kitchen counter from the floor without a running start. I often wondered if she was part cat. Everyone else tried convincing me she was a Maltese. All I know is she captured our hearts and began a new adventure.
In Nov. 2006 the company my husband & I worked at for 7 years filed bankruptcy and we were both out of a job. After much consideration, prayer, (and some new budgeting techniques), we decided it would be best if I stayed at home, with the kids, my 2 boys Justin 15 & Kyle 13......okay and the birds, the cat, and Reese. Well Reese said she needed a playmate, so we brought home Bella; they were the dynamic duo for over a year. Next we acquired Tiny Snowball, my first Maltese, then Macy & Jonah. Before I knew it I was head over heels in love with my little fuzzballs and I started researching the toy breeds. Over the last 5 years I have fallen deeply in love with these little ones and though I've caught some slack for occassionally producing a litter of designer breeds I could never pick just one. I do breed purebred Maltese, they have come to be a favorite, but there is nothing cuter than a Maltipoo or Morkie. I guess I carried over my need for variety from the birds. In 2009 we started our line of Yorkshire Terriers & will be expanding in the coming years. Sasha is our tiny & beautiful baby girl who started the love of the breed. Honey, Jewel, and Foxy are our beautiful blondes also from champion backgrounds including Stardust & Fairytales. The newest additions are Misha (Holly & Sur Shot's little Angel), Lil' Khya Bear a gorgeous black & gold 6 pound beauty & 2.8 pound Tiny Hobo. These boys have perfect little petite features, teddy bear faces & the short compact structure. So be looking in 2012 for some more beautiful babies!
I've spent many nights lying on the floor with a momma sometimes for days, patiently awaiting the arrival of the newest addition, cutting cords, removing sacs, bottle feeding pups, and loving moms. I wake at 6 a.m daily to begin feeding, cleaning, holding and training. There are no days off, no vacation time, no sick leave. Sometimes the day ends at Midnight, sometimes it doesn't end (new babies must be fed around the clock), but even though the days get long, and there's always a mess to clean up, I can honestly say for the first time in my life I love what I do! Animals are my passion, always have been, always will be. I take great pride in our babies and in our reputation, so when you are ready for a new addition, or just have questions, I hope you will consider us for your precious pup, or feathered friend.
