Birds Singing the Folsom Prison Blues

August 26, 2018 by MoJo

Building cages around all food sources at the bird feeder did slow down the Grackles.  I imagine the juvenile, Red-bellied Woodpecker singing the Prison Blues.  You can see him stretching out his neck (and his long tongue) to reach the suet deep within the prison walls.  The tiny Downy Woodpecker, on the other hand, quickly learned to scurry underneath the bars to happily eat her fill.

It's far from the ideal bird restaurant.  But, but as you will see in the feature video, the birds adapted quite well.  No one is going to sleep hungry!

Grackles Have Babies – Caught Unaware

August 22, 2018 by MoJo

I stopped dead in my tracks when there appeared, before my startled eyes, the obvious:  Grackles Have Babies.  There are simply no words to describe my dismay.  A recurring black bear, an olympic-qualified climbing snake, and a FLOCK of Grackles isn’t enough distress?  Really?  Grackles have to have babies, too?!  Yes, they do.  That’s where flocks come from, MoJo.

Grackles not only have babies, they have BIG, HUNGRY babies — PLURAL.  I’m trying really hard NOT to find them cute.  This might be apparent in the music accompanying the video.  Definitely tongue-in-cheek!
